39 Turkeys?

39 Turkeys?

What are we cooking today?

One of the first questions each cook day is: “What are we cooking today?” However, when the volunteers walked into the kitchen on a recent morning, this question was NOT asked. The countertops were covered with thawed turkeys – 39 thawed turkeys.

Why do you have all these turkeys?

As a food rescue, we keep perfectly good food out of the landfills. As a food rescue kitchen, we cook these donated items and provide nutritious meals to our hunger relief partners.

Who helps prepare these meals?

We worked with a team of 10+ volunteers on this particular cook day. Our volunteers opened all the packages, seasoned the turkeys with oil, salt and pepper, loaded these onto sheet pans and into the ovens. We were able to cook 16 turkeys at one time!

Who receives this food?

We work with other hunger relief organizations, and these organizations distribute the prepared food to individuals or families in need.

What did you make with all these turkeys?

We made enough turkey salad containing celery, red onion, yogurt, mayonnaise, champagne vinegar (because it was donated to us), salt and pepper to feed more that 300 individuals. Simple, delicious, and nutritious.

What about the waste?

The carcasses will be used to make broth for future soups. Many volunteers asked to bring some home to make broth for their freezers!
